The Ethiopia Data Use Partnership project is a collaborative effort by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI) and the Ethiopia Federal Ministry of Health that aims to improve the collection and use of high-quality routine health information at all levels of the Ethiopian health system. The ultimate goal of the partnership is to improve the quality, efficiency and availability of primary healthcare and nutrition services in the four most populous regions in Ethiopia (Tigray; Amhara; Oromia; and Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region, or “SNNPR”) that together consist of approximately 63.6 million people. The partnership builds on Ethiopia’s previous investments in its health information system, strengthened health services and improved health outcomes, particularly for mothers and children seeking care in the four most populous regions of Ethiopia. A central component of this effort is the rollout of a new national electronic health information system in the Tigray, Amhara, Oromia and SNNPR regions.
To spearhead innovation and encourage local enthusiasm for health system change informed by routinely collected health information, the Data Use Partnership leadership team assists the Federal Ministry of Health in establishing several Data Use Innovation Labs to identify, nurture and share local solutions to health system weaknesses. The work undertaken in these Innovation Labs includes implementation research and the application of human-centered design techniques and tools to address data supply and use challenges. The goal of the Innovation Labs is to refine and advance existing components and practices in the Health Management Information System (to provide immediate opportunities to iterate, improve and scale data use strategies).
JSI works in partnership with the Ethiopia Federal Ministry of Health and others to address the existing challenges within the health information system and to position the health system to achieve the four pillars of excellence outlined in Ethiopia’s Health Sector Transformation Plan.
The Ethiopia Data Use Partnership is co-funded by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB, and Malaria.
