Lauren Yee on Finding the Familiar

The celebrated playwright and Doris Duke Artist Lauren Yee talks about mining family relationships and intergenerational struggles to tell intricate stories that resonate across audiences. Yee's perceptive work often explores history reimagined through different lenses and the lives of people on the margins of or outside of a dominant culture. Her award-winning play “Cambodian Rock Band,” a comedy infused with music by the band Dengue Fever and classic Cambodian oldies, shadows a young woman on her mission to take down a Khmer Rouge war criminal thirty years after her father fled Cambodia. The play has appeared at multiple venues across the country, including at the Signature Theatre, which released the soundtrack for it in May 2020 and in which she is seen in this short film.
